Welcome to Ligny
As a building, the old 17th century farm that houses the Ligny 1815 Museum perfectly blends in with the rural character of the village and its history.
As the setting of the Battle of Ligny on 16 June 1815, it served as a working farm until 1976 when it was bought by the Ligny Tourist Office with the aim of developing a historical, cultural and tourist centre.
From 1981 onwards, ten years of patient and painstaking restoration and refurbishment gave the building a new purpose and a second lease of life, serving as a place of remembrance where history is passed on.
The museum is billeted in the former farmhouse, where the small size of the living quarters gives the museum a human scale, allowing visitors to appreciate history from a human perspective.
The barn, which links up with the museum floor by way of a modern, understated glazed passageway is a cultural hub and culinary discovery, with the ground floor restaurant serving regional dishes prepared with local produce.
